Les Vepres Siciliennes (opera)

Verdi's grand opera in five acts, Les Vepres Siciliennes, is quite rarely performed so for it to be the second in the current Royal Opera House's cinema season means that many more people will get the chance to see this masterpiece. The major new production will be conducted by Antonio Pappano and directed by Stefan Herheim who is making his debut at the Covent garden venue. As well as opera stars Bryan Hymel, Marina Poplavskaya, Erwin Schrott and Michael Volle, the production will also include dancers from both the Royal Ballet and the Royal Danish Ballet. It should be an amazing spectacle!

The French have occupied Sicily, and Hélène is held hostage by Montfort, the French governor, who has had her brother executed. She turns to the partisan Jean Procida and the rebellious patriot Henri in her bid for vengeance.
