There's a wonderful three-evenings-and-an-afternoon of musical theatre planned at the Under Ground in August when The Green Room Productions will be putting on their next show, an affectionate tribute to Joyce Grenfell entitled Just Joyce. The one woman show (plus pianist!) will star Sandra Cheesman who we have previously seen in The Wife The Mistress The Chair and in Little Gem - three very different performances.
Joyce Grenfell was born Joyce Irene Phipps in London in 1910. The daughter of an architect, she had a comfortable upper-class upbringing culminating in time spent in Paris at Mlle Ozanne's Finishing School aged seventeen. Her stage debut came in 1939 and for her war service she toured North Africa, the Middle East and India in the company of pianist Viola Tunnard, both performing for the troops. Joyce is best remembered now for her monologues and comedy songs but she also wrote satires for the BBC and appeared in a number of films including the St Trinian's series.
Just Joyce celebrates her wonderful and witty writing and will include several famous pieces: The Nursery School (George, Don't Do That), Stately As A Galleon, Shirley's Girlfriend, Lumpy Latimer and I Like Life.
