I mentioned a piece of Hermione Allsopp's work when she exhibited as part of the East Sussex Open at the Towner Gallery earlier this year. Her 'Field Of Dreams' installation was the major work spread across the floor on the left side of the gallery. When Dave and I visited the Towner last weekend, we partook of a couple of drinks in the cafe and I noticed that the current Cafe Project display consists of five images created by Hermione. I believe they are inspirations for various three-dimensional works and three of the images are pictured on the Drawings page of Hermione's own website - it's the top two images and also the seventh one down. I can see elements of Field Of Dreams in the first and seventh images. I really should have made a note of their titles when they were right in front of me!
Hermione's Cafe Project is on until the end of June and she also currently has work at Hoxton Arches in London as part of the Void Open. She primarily creates her art with found items and utilises only domestic items originally from interior settings. Her inspirations come from considering questions of choice, fashion and taste. By choosing items from charity and junk shops, she deliberately works with what others have previously discarded, placing these things into new settings and configurations. I love the humour in her work. Check out the Stools page of her website to see partially deconstructed furniture with a distinctively anthromorphic slant!
