For the ballet fans amongst us, Southern Youth Ballet will be performing Pineapple Poll for-one-night-only at the end of October, together with their own orchestra conducted by Ken Roberts.
A somewhat bizarre tale of cross-dressing aboard the good ship HMS Hot Cross Bun, the Gilbert and Sullivan inspired piece is a comic ballet which is based on The Bumboat Woman's Tale, written by W S Gilbert. Apparently HMS Pinafore is also based in part on this story. Pineapple Poll premiered at Sadlers Wells in 1951 with choreography by John Cranko. The music is a mixture of Arthur Sullivan's tunes from a number of operas including The Mikado, The Pirates Of Penzance, HMS Pinafore and Ruddigore.
Southern Youth Ballet was founded sixteen years ago by Liz Buckland and trains ballerinas from eight years and up. The Company enables young dancers from right across the South-East of England to perform in cameo productions of classical ballets. The last three annual peformances have been The Nutcracker (2011), La Fille (2010) and Coppelia (2009).
