Liquorice (art)

Encouraged by this year's Hailsham Arts Festival to explore the town further, I discovered a wonderful new-to-me shop last Saturday. Tucked away in The Mews on George Street, Liquorice Gifts has been open for two years and is owned by Phil Crowhurst. He stocks a wonderful array of art, crafts, homewares and stationery, much of it created by local artists. At the time of my visit, Margaret Turton had some of her work in the shop, as did Melissa Shuttleworth.

A great place for gift ideas, particularly for women although there are some unisex items and some intended for men, there are candles and jewellery, glassware and ceramics, art and photography. I particularly liked a selection of wooden items including a delicate little needle case and A Round Tuit - vital for every home! Plus recycled vinyl items including reasonably priced handmade coasters. There are also several racks of unusual greetings cards - I picked up a couple by Anne Howard and Soul Water - as well as wrapping paper, notebooks and journals.

Next time you've got a birthday to buy for, go take a look!

Liquorice Gifts, Mon-Sat, 09:30-16:30.
