Society of Eastbourne Artists (art)

The Society of Eastbourne Artists was founded in 1946 and was originally known as Eastbourne Arts Club. From 12 members at the start, the Society now has over 180 and is the largest Art Society in the Eastbourne area. Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in painting. Current members range from professionals to amateurs, career to leisure painters, experienced artists to beginners. The  Society’s aim is to encourage all those who have an interest in painting, sculpture, or ceramics, and also to promote Eastbourne as a recognised centre for the visual arts.
Exhibitions of members' work are held annually and give an opportunity to display the Society's talent both to other members and to the general public, with the added potential bonus of sales. Admission is always free although a charitable donation is requested for the catalogue - and without that, visitors will have no idea whose work they are viewing! The art is representative of all the painting media, as well as some mixed media pieces, and covers a wide range of subjects from still life and flora to landscapes and portraiture, to abstract creations. I visited the June exhibition and you can read my blog post about it.

The Society also has monthly meetings which are held at the Lansdowne Hotel on the third Friday of most months. Each month an experienced artist demonstrates the technique of their preferred medium, explaining how they choose to approach their subject and how they develop a painting. The idea behind these demonstrations is to encourage members to experiment with new skills or perhaps revisit existing ones. The meetings are also open to non-members who can pay a very reasonable charge of £3 to sit in.
