Blackout & Bunting (event)

Following on from the success of "A Stitch In Time Saves Lives" last year, the Eastbourne Museums team are planning a two-day extravaganza in celebration of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Blackout & Bunting at the Redoubt Fortress will be a 1940s inspired weekend including workshops, displays, songs and dancing, a street party and plenty of good cups of tea! The ticket price will also include entry to the Redoubt Fortress museum which is a fascinating treasure trove in its own right. We went last summer and easily spent several hours there!
During the daytime on the Saturday there will be living history displays and workshops on a wide variety of wartime subjects with plenty of chances to get involved:
   - Make the most of your wartime rations, join ‘Utility Jude’ for her Ministry of Food cooking demonstrations.
   - Sign up for Bomber Command Battle School.
   - Pause for a cup of tea & a piece of bread pudding at the W.V.S Emergency Canteen.
   - Take drill practice with the Eastbourne Home Guard.
   - ‘Stand by your bed soldier’ at the Red Cross Military Hospital.
   - Be resourceful at the Make do & Mend workshop.
   - ‘Serve your country’ at the Recruitment Post.
   - Weight your rations for the week at the Rationing shop.
   - Make an appointment at the 1940s hair salon.
Day tickets are Adult £6, Senior £5, Child £4. Sat 2nd June, 10:00 to 16:00.
Weekend tickets are Adult £10, Senior £8, Child £6. Sat & Sun, 10:00 to 16:00

The parade ground of the historic Fortress is the venue for The Blackout Dance on the Saturday evening. A fabulous opportunity for dressing up in your best classic 1940s outfit and stepping out to Hot Jazz, Big Band Swing & Jump Blues from The Swinging Detective. I've seen on Facebook that the organisers have been out scouting some lovely vintage finds for the tombola and there will also be a bar. For those less confident about the dance steps, you can learn the "stroll" from 7 to 7.45pm before the main dance gets underway.
Tickets for the evening are £6 in advance from the Redoubt Fortress or £8 on the door.
Saturday 2nd June, 19:00 to 23:00.

Then practise your wartime melodies ready for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Community Street Party on the Sunday. To get you in the mood, there will be a family Crown & Flag Making Workshop from 10am until 1pm and living history displays throughout the day. Sandwiches and cake will be served from 1pm to 2pm and the W.V.S Emergency Canteen will also be serving drinks for the street party. Meet & greet a 'Royal' visitor as Princess Elizabeth-as-she-was-in-the-1940s makes a visit and join in the singalong to end the celebratory weekend.
Day tickets are Adult £6, Senior £5, Child £4. Sun 3rd June, 10:00 to 16:00.
Weekend tickets are Adult £10, Senior £8, Child £6. Sat & Sun, 10:00 to 16:00.

I've only seen dressing up mentioned in relation to the Blackout Dance but I'm sure turning up suitably attired for the two daytime events will be encouraged as well. I might even be tempted to give my 'new' vintage dress an airing. It's practically the right era ...!
